No Place Like London for the Holidays

The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is decorated with 500 white lights.

While there’s no place like home for the holidays, we’d just like to remind you that this time of year is also one of the best times to visit London! From the Winter Wonderland Markets in Hyde Park to the Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink, planning a trip to London during Christmas is a magnificent idea. The entire city lights up with the holiday spirit!

One of our personal favorites is the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square. Decorated in traditional Norwegian style with 500 white lights, this year’s enormous 22-meter Norwegian Spruce has to be a must-see during your stay in London! Since 1947, the tree has been given each year by Norway to London as a thank you for Britain’s help during World War II.

The tree lighting ceremony took place earlier this month and included caroling by not one but two choirs—the St. Martin-in-the Fields choir and the Salvation Army—before the big moment when the switch was flipped, lighting up the tree and also the Christmas spirit in everyone in London.

But you’ve got to hurry and book your London trip now because the lights go out on 6 January! So if you’re looking at where to stay in London, celebrate the holidays in a charming London vacation apartment instead of a London hotel. These apartments are located near some of the best Christmas displays in London. And if you’ve fallen in love with the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square like we have, our lovely 1-bedroom Mayfair apartment is the perfect short-term London vacation rental for you! And if you can’t make it this year, start planning for next year!

Kate Middleton Gets Short at Gary Barlow Concert

Kate Middleton, Price Williams, and Gary Barlow

Kate Middleton, Price Williams, and Gary Barlow

Kate Middleton and Prince William attended a Gary Barlow benefit concert at The Royal Albert Hall in the South Kensington area of London earlier this week, and the Dutchess’ dress grabbed all the headlines! She wore a black and white lace dress by Zara that cost only ₤69.99. For Kate who has favored knee-length dresses, a dress showing her knees was a bold new move for her, and we totally love it! The dress was absolutely charming.

We weren’t the only ones who liked it. Within an hour of her red carpet appearance, the dress sold out on Zara’s website. And now are now there are reports that the dress as well as imitations are fetching over ₤200 on eBay and other stores.

Of course, this doesn’t come a huge surprise. In January, she set off a similar shopping spree she when she wore a ₤310 black Libelula coat to a wedding. It’s no wonder that Kate has topped this year’s Harper’s Bazaar’s best-dress list!

On another note, Kate and William are big fans of the singing competition X Factor, which Barlow helps judge. They told as much to X-Factor finalist and Liverpudlian Marcus Collins who performed on stage with Barlow.

The Royal Albert Hall is an amazing venue in London for music and entertainment. Upcoming events include the London Christmas Festival, the opera Aida, and Swan Lake on Ice. This makes South Kensington one of the best places to stay in London and several of our London vacation rentals are located nearby, including our Cornwall vacation apartment and the 3-bedroom Victoria short-term rental, so you always have a place to stay when in town for a show.
