The Chelsea Flower Show in London

Chelsea Flower Show Gardens London

The Chelsea Flower Show 2013 is about to begin!

Calling all green fingers! Grab your sun hats for ‘tis almost time for THE biggest horticultural gathering of the Great British summer. Actually it’s arguably THE biggest horticultural gathering in the world. Dearest London Perfect readers, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show is almost upon us. This annual event takes place each May and this year runs from the 21st to 25th.

Alliums Chelsea Flower Show London

Ah, we do love a bit of allium action

And what a gathering it is. Tickets have already sold out for 2013 and around 161,000 visitors will have a good look at the 500-odd exhibitors, “oohing” and “aaahing” over the traditional, the exciting, the contemporary and the controversial (of which more later) of the gardening world.

Chelsea Flower Show Land Art

Traditional, exciting, contemporary or controversial? You decide.

Gardens aren’t simply spaces to stick in a few Pansies or Busy Lizzies. When created with flair and skill they are an artistic experience that delights all the senses. Colour, perfume and texture are found in abundance whilst the sounds of a green space – from wind rustling through leaves to birdsong – bring balm to the soul. And as for taste … anyone who has grown their own fruit and vegetables will testify to the superiority of flavor over any shop bought impersonator. A true artist could not possibly resist such a palette … and what a location to show off the final art works!

Chelsea Flower Show Garden Visit

Grassy texture and a calm oasis of lush green. Balm for the soul indeed…

The Flower Show is held in the grounds of the very elegant Chelsea Royal Hospital, a 5-minute walk for those lucky enough to stay in London Perfect’s Hamilton or Elliot apartments in Chelsea. The Show is also celebrating its Centenary. That’s 100 years of celebrating the magnificence that is the gardening creativity of the British (Capability Brown and Humphry Repton anyone?). We may not have an empire any more but, by gum, we’re jolly good at gardening.

Lancelot_('Capability')_Brown_by_Sir_Nathaniel_Dance-Holland

Lancelot “Capability” Brown (1716-83), the Granddaddy of English Gardening

And keen. Did you know that one of Britain’s longest running radio shows – for which gardening clubs up and down the nation still fight pitched battles with trowels and rakes for the honour of hosting – is a gardening show. Since 1947 Gardener’s Question Time has ruled the airwaves.

But back to the Chelsea Flower Show and I would just like to point out that it’s not just about the best and fairest of British gardening. Ok, so Prince Harry is involved in the garden created by the Sentebale charity of which he is the founder. He’s very British. And there will be gnomes (of which more later). Which have been very British since the 1930s. But there will also be exhibitors from the US, Australia, Canada and well, lots of other exotic places. Like Wales.

Chelsea Flower Show in London

Visitors hail from every nation at the Chelsea Flower Show

The point is if you can get a ticket or know someone who can get one for you THEN YOU MUST GO TO THE SHOW. It’s the place to see what today’s greatest garden designers are up to and what intriguing horticultural delights you’ll be cultivating in your garden soon.

And this year, controversially, for the first time in 100 years… there will be gnomes.

Garden Gnomes at the Chelsea Flower Show

“Controversial? Me?”

“Whut?” I hear you mutter. You see the common garden gnome – so beloved of rockeries and gardeners with a sense of silliness up and down this nation – have been banned, banned at Chelsea since its inception. In recent years “gnome-fanciers” have been protesting outside the front gates at this terrible discrimination. The problem is that the rules of the Show state that coloured statues (as well as balloons and bunting) are not allowed. Probably because they are considered a distraction from all the floral amazingness. Which is fair enough.

Gnome Sleeping in Garden

The Garden Gnome: Complement or Distraction? You decide.

But gnomes, gnomes… they come into a special, elevated category all of their own and this year, and for one year only, they will stand tall amongst the brightest and best of the horticultural titans. 9 foot tall in fact. At the entrance gate. It’s all about setting the tone, a very British one that even at it’s most traditional, beautiful and glorious just can’t take itself too seriously.

If you’ll be visiting the Chelsea Flower Show this year, check out our Insider Tips for the Chelsea Flower Show. London Perfect will be there this year, and we’ll report back on all the gardening insights, inspiration and gnome-sighting adventures at the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show!

The Great Gatsby in London

Friday, May 10th, 2013
Charleston Dance

The decadence and glamour of The Great Gatsby is coming to London!

London is all of a flutter. In a “Roaring 20s,” Charlestony, sequined-fringe’d-flapper-dress sort of flutter. On May 16th Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby will be released. Judging by past successes, like Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge, his movie depiction of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s glamour and decadence on Long Island in the summer of 1922 promises to be a lush spectacle indeed. Just take a gander at the preview …

But what on earth has this got to do with London? Lurhmann’s an Australian and Long Island is ever so slightly closer to New York than it is Britain’s fair capital. Well, there are a couple of connections:

  1.  The character Gatsby affects an English accent in Fitzgerald’s book. That’s how cool us Brits were in 1922. The Americans wanted to sound like us. How flattering.
  2. The actress Carey Mulligan, who plays Gatsby’s love interest Daisy Buchanan, is not only English but is a London girl.
Carey Mulligan Great Gatsby

Carey Mulligan. Beautiful, brilliant and British.

Marvelous. With this in mind I would like to point out a couple of events of relevant interest to those of you in London.

The Great Gatsby at Brooks Brothers in London

On the off chance you’re shopping on Regent Street, THE hub of London’s West End Shopping district, do pop in to Brooks Brothers at 150 Regent Street. Yes, yes. I know they are American tailors of great repute and quality who dressed the great and the good of 1920s America, but they also dressed all the chaps in the upcoming Gatsby movie. And that includes the rather swoon-worthy Leo DiCaprio. Oh my.

Warner Brothers Great Gatsby

And at the Regent Street store some of the dashing Brooks Brother ensembles in the company of some delicious flapper dresses worn by the actors are enjoying a small exhibition. Stunning, simply stunning. We sauntered along (or was it shimmied?) recently and here are a few photos to wet your appetite!

Of course there must be champagne!

Northern Ballet’s The Great Gatsby in London

Should being in the presence of this sequined loveliness not be enough to sate your thirst for all things “Roaring” and “20s” then I suggest you pop along to Sadler’s Wells. May 14-18 the Northern Ballet are presenting a version of The Great Gatsby that will be a wonderful confection of traditional ballet and well, lots of “Roaring” and “20s.”

The music, gorgeous costumes and David Nixon’s beautiful choreography bring Fitzgerald’s book to life in a seductive and completely entertaining way. Here’s the preview trailer to set the scene and tempt you even more!

Gosh. After all that I think it might be time to don the glad rags and get ready for a proper knees up at Prohibition, London’s premiere night of hedonistic decadence. Or maybe pin down the location of the pop-up speakeasy that is the Candlelight Club.

Either way, let there be champagne and vodka martinis. Hooray!

Springtime Fun – Easter in London!

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013
Spring in Kensington London St Mary Abbots Church Garden

A glorious spring setting in the St. Mary Abbots Church gardens in Kensington

While winter has been hanging on a bit longer than usual this year, spring really is just around the corner. The spring flowers are popping up and soon the parks and gardens in London will be filled with the vibrant announcement of the arrival of the new season. With warmer temperatures, holiday events for Easter and the aforementioned bursts of colourful flowers, spring is one of the most enjoyable times of the year in London. This year Easter Sunday falls on March 31st, and all around the Easter holiday there will be eggs to hunt, chocolate to be eaten and lots of fun to be had!  Here’s a look at some of the fun springtime things to do during the Easter holidays in London.

Enjoy the Blooms in Kensington Gardens

Beautiful Spring Blossoms in Kensington Gardens

Spring blossoming in Kensington Garden

The springtime is one of the most charming times of the year to stroll through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. On a sunny day everyone is out and about riding bikes, roller blading, jogging, letting the dogs run and play or simply relaxing in the sunshine. Find a pretty spot to rest your feet while enjoying these beautiful gardens right in the heart of London.

Easter at Kew Gardens

Chocolate Quest Kew Gardens

Discover the history of chocolate at Kew Gardens this Easter

Attention chocolate lovers … head to Kew Gardens this spring to experience Chocolate Quest dedicated to over 4,000 years of chocolate history. Now that’s a lot of chocolate! This family friendly event takes place from Friday, March 29th  through Sunday, April 14th, 2013 and is included in admission to Kew Gardens. Spring is a marvellous time to visit Kew Gardens, with glorious spring flowers bringing the gardens to life. You can even visit the spring bulb map to see where all the spring flowers are located … the daffodils are just about to burst into bloom!

Easter Chocolates & Sweets

Peggy Porschen Belgravia London

Spring at Peggy Porschen’s cupcake cafe in Belgravia

It wouldn’t be Easter without something sweet! The history of chocolate does rather make one hungry for the real thing, and there are plenty of places to find fabulous chocolate in London. Why not stop by Prestat, one of London’s oldest chocolate shops, which is located in the lovely Princes Arcade just off Piccadilly. This Royal Warranted chocolatier was founded in 1902 by Frenchman Antoine Dufour who was Napoleon III’s personal chocolatier. The brightly coloured packages (and, of course, the divine chocolates inside!) make Prestat a great spot to shop for gifts.

We’re particularly keen on the chocolates, truffles and sweets from Melt on Notting Hill’s Ledbury Road. It’s a sweet little boutique chocolate shop along one of our favorite shopping streets in Notting Hill. If you’re looking for a special cake or delicious cupcakes to celebrate Easter in London, do stop in the Peggy Porschen specialty cake shop and cupcake cafe in Belgravia. The displays are so tempting … you’ll want one of everything!

The Big Egg Hunt

This annual fundraising event includes fun things to do, a guessing game hunt to find all the eggs and an auction to raise money for Action for Children. This year the Big Egg Hunt grande finale will take place in Covent Garden from March 22nd to April 1st, 2013. If you’ll be travelling in London this Easter with your family, here’s a great list of Easter egg hunts and kid friendly spring activities in London!

Picnic in the Park

Daffodils in St James's Park London

Take a break from sightseeing to enjoy a picnic or break in one of the parks in central London surrounded by the colours of spring. St. James’s Park between Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square is a great spot to soak up the sun. It’s also lovely place to let the kids run and play while watching city life go by.

Easter Sunday Services in London

Easter at St Paul's Cathedral London

Celebrate Easter Sunday at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London

Simply visiting St. Paul’s Cathedral in London is an awe inspiring experience. During Holy Week and Easter you can join in services and concerts at St. Paul’s culminating in the Easter Sunday at the cathedral. Check their Easter Services & Events page to find out what will be taking place during your visit. Do keep in mind that due to religious services the regular visitation hours at St. Paul’s may vary from the regular schedule during Easter.

If you’re staying at the lovely Eden vacation rental near Trafalgar Square, you’ll be just around the corner from St. Martin in the Field’s Church, which often hosts choral and concert events during Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday services. Stop in for a beautiful concert and moment of reflection while sightseeing in London.

Planning to visit Westminster Abbey during Holy Week or for Easter Sunday services? This is an exceptional time to visit the beautiful abbey to attend services or enjoy a concert. Check their Easter Services page for all the details on visiting during the holiday.

Charming Notting hill architecture leading to mews

With an ideal Notting Hill location and lovely outdoor space, this mews home would make a wonderful family home in London as well as an excellent rental property for investors.

Why We Like Mews Houses:  Mews houses only became “homes” in the past 30 years, for they were originally the stables where the horses, carriages and servants lived in the Victorian Era. Located in quiet cobblestone streets behind the grand white Victorian homes, the Lords and Ladies called on their servants to bring round their carriages from the mews behind their gorgeous homes.

London started to grow as an important financial center in the 1980s, and citizens around the world began to realize that England is a politically stable country and a solid country to invest in. Gradually, these old stables were bought up and re-developed into charming homes.  The garage doors are where the old coaches and horses were kept and you can often see a doorway above where the hay was stored.  We like mews homes as an investment for two reasons:  the first is that you can own them freehold – they are yours forever.  The second is they are real homes, albeit smaller (and naturally less expensive) than the grand homes in the streets in front. They are tucked away from the bustling crowd. And finally, you don’t have service charges – all reasons that make mews one of our favorite types of investments in London.

They make excellent homes for your stay in London, any time of year.  And when you’re away, they are excellent short term rentals which we are delighted to market and manage while the owner is away.
