After living in Shad Thames for 27 years, The Design Museum has moved to South Kensington, now brushing shoulders with the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum – perfect for a lovely day of museum hopping.

It also just so happens to be neighbors with many of our London Perfect apartments. No need to trek across the city to enjoy this sleek and stylish new site!

Why the Move?

Although the previous Shad Thames location was pretty, it lacked sufficient space to display the museum’s extensive permanent collection. No longer. John Pawson and OMA architects have renovated this stunning 1960’s modernist building.

The effect? For the first time in its history, the museum’s entire permanent collection is displayed in 10,000 square feet.

Exhibits and Collections

The Design Museum features designs broadly related to a variety of topics. Come see the ambitious, ‘California: Designing Freedom’ exhibition which runs until the 17th October. The premise focuses on the 1960’s counterculture movement in California and how this particular part of the world had such a profound impact on contemporary design.

You should also make a note of the upcoming ‘Ferrari: Under the Skin’ exhibition which kicks off from 15th November until 15th April, 2018. This will be mark the 70th anniversary of Ferrari, lifting the lid on one of the most iconic brands. You will gain exclusive access into the world of car making, as well as uncovering the life of the man himself, Enzo Ferrari. This will be a rare treat for the car enthusiast in the family!

London’s Design Museum is worth visiting simply for its stunning aesthetics, but it also presents us with designs that reflect on where we are today – and where we might go in the future. As stated on their website, “design is a way to understand the world and how you can change it.” And their museum experience offers exactly that.
