London Theatre: Our Picks for Best Shows in 2012!

February 4th, 2012

In case you didn’t know, London’s West End is home to one of the largest theater districts in the world! With more than a dozen of the world’s most beautiful theaters packed into this small district, it’s no wonder that it’s known as Theatreland! So if you’re looking for fun things to do during your London vacation, look no further than London’s theatre district! And this spring is promising to be particularly rosy for theatre lovers of all ages!

Opening later this month at the Palace Theatre, all of London is a raving about Jonathan Church’s stage adaptation of the 1952 MGM musical “Singing in the Rain.”

Another dazzling adaptation of a Hollywood film, “Ghost: The Musical,” is playing at the Piccadilly Theatre and promises to make you laugh and then cry in this heart-warming story.

But if you’re in the mood to indulge your devilish side, “Sweeney Todd,” starring Michael Ball as the demon barber of Fleet Street and Imelda Staunton as Mrs. Lovett, will begin slashing throats at the Adelphia Theatre this March.

If you’re looking for something for the kids to enjoy, there’s the excellent “Matilda: The Musical,” which tells the story of a  little girl with an huge imagination battling the powers-that-be, at the Cambridge Theatre.

Starting in May, Kensington Gardens will be presenting a production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” which is sure to provide plenty of Turkish delight to all!

Of course, you don’t want to go to the theatre on an empty stomach, so drop by some of Theatreland’s fine restaurants for a pre-show meal . Just across the street from the Palace Theatre is Incognico, with the decor of a classical French Brasserie and a menu of delightful French and Italian dishes. If you’re in the mood for something a little more eclectic, the Hampshire Bar and Restaurant provides a unique blend of classic and modern British cuisine on Leicester Square. If you’re in the mood for an after-show drink and want to rub elbows with the cast and crew, check out the White Hart Pub near Shaftesbury Avenue in the heart of  the West End.

Of course, you’ll need a place to stay nearby, but don’t worry because we’ve got you covered with some of the best short-term vacation rentals in London that are just minutes away from  the action in the West End. Take our Notting Hill Gate short-term rental apartment for example. From there it’s just a quick 10-minute subway ride on the Central Line to Theatreland. Getting around London couldn’t be easier.

A few tips before you pack your bags: First, make sure you book your must-see shows a few weeks ahead of time because many of these shows do sell-out! If you’re looking for a Saturday evening show or a very popular show (like The Lion King or Mamma Mia!), you better make that a month or two in advance. Next, don’t worry about dress code. You’ll fit right in whether you’re wearing a suit and tie or a T-shirt and jeans.

Are you as excited as we are bout the upcoming shows in London? Good! Now, hurry up, buy your tickets, and get to London to take in these wonderful shows before the final curtain drops!

London 2012 Art Exhibits: World-Renown Artists Are Coming to London Art Galleries This Year!

Over the past few years, London’s art scene has exploded, challenging New York and Berlin for the title of “Art Capital of the World.” New galleries and exhibits are constantly opening, and every year the city’s Frieze Art Fair is a can’t-miss event for the international art community. And if you’re planning a trip to London this year, you’re in luck because some truly amazing art exhibitions are coming to the city’s museums and galleries!

This year, you can catch the Royal Academy‘s exhibit of the most recent landscapes and experimental art of Britain’s own and beloved artist David Hockney who has recently returned home from a 30-year hiatus in Los Angeles. At the National Portrait Gallery, a retrospective of over 100 realistic portraits and unfinished work by painter Lucian Freud–who sadly passed away last summer–will open next month. Also next month, the Tate Britain will be open an exhibit of over 150 works by Picasso that explores his special connection with Great Britain. And in April, the Tate Modern will present a retrospective of British artist Damien Hirst’s work, featuring his famous pickled shark and diamond skull.

Yoko Ono will be exhibiting her artwork--including Smile Film No. 5--at the the Serpentine Gallery this summer

Meanwhile, smaller London art galleries also have an exciting year planned. John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono will be exhibiting her multimedia and performance artwork at the the Serpentine Gallery this summer. Also, Rachel Whiteread will be using the facade of the Whitechapel Gallery as her own personal canvas as she decorates it with a “tree of life” motif. And artist Jeremy Deller’s brings to the Hayward Art Gallery his socially conscious artwork, including his event-film that re-enacts a 1984 battle between striking miners and police.

And if you work up an appetite wandering around these galleries, there’s plenty of places to stop in for a bite nearby. At the Tate Modern Restaurant, you can relax with some contemporary cuisine and a glass of wine while taking in some truly extraordinary views of the city. If the weather’s nice, you should head over to the Wallace Restaurant located in the Wallace Collection’s sculpture garden for some seasonal French dishes and fresh air.

For a place to stay near the galleries, might we recommend a short-term London apartment in the Mayfair section of London. From there, it’s a shot trip to both the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Academy, and getting around London to the other galleries is a breeze.

London’s January Sales Are On!

January 6th, 2012
On Boxing Day 2011, shoppers stampede through the doors at London's Selfridges.

On Boxing Day 2011, shoppers stampede through the doors at London's Selfridges.

It’s January! And that means it’s shopping season in London! If you’re travelling to London this month, you’re in store for unbeatable bargains at the city’s fabulous department stores and high street shops. Fashion, electronics, furniture… just about everything is marked down! Sometimes up to 70% off! It’s a shopaholic’s paradise! So pack your bags and come experience London’s January sales.

Traditionally, Boxing Day was celebrated on the day after Christmas to give a day off and a gift to servants who worked on the original holiday to make sure that their employers enjoyed their Christmas. But today, the holiday is better known as the official start of the January sales! On Boxing Day, stores open early, enticing the public with door-buster deals. Shoppers get there even earlier, lining up outside for hours to be the first ones inside! When the doors open, it’s every shopper for herself in an all-out mad dash to the cash register!

If you weren’t in London for Boxing Day, don’t worry! Most sales last until the end of January, and the last days will see some of the deepest price cuts! We have some of the best short-term apartment rentals in London where you can drop off your bags and catch a quick nap before continuing your shopping marathon.

And if you want to join the thousands lined up outside early on Boxing Day next year, we know some of the best to shop.  Start out on Oxford Street where you’ll find the major Department Stores: Selfridges, John Lewis, Debenhams, DH Evans, the largest Marks and Spencer, BHS, Zara, H+M and many more. Our personal favourite is John Lewis, but Selfridges is a popular destination filled with designer labels and markdowns on the first day of the sale.

Wander down Regent Street to the iconic Liberty’s, another of our favourites.  Liberty’s is unique–a mixture of well-known brands and famous for their fabrics and William Morris-style wallpapers.  You’ll find less well-known labels and wonderful toiletries as well. Continue on to Piccadilly and have lunch at Fortnum and Mason’s, famous for its tea and food halls.

What would the sales be without Harrod’s?  As their sale motto goes, “There is only one sale.”  You’ll be exhausted from shopping Oxford Street, but if you’re up for it, continue on to Harrod’s or go the next day.

High Street Kensington is the other popoular destination where you’ll find fashion retailers from Zara to Accessorize as well as dozens of other excellent fashion brands.  The Mayfair short-term rental is an excellent location for the sales as you’re close to Piccadilly and can walk to Fortnum’s and Oxford Street.  Or hop on the tube from our short-term apartment vacation rental in Notting Hill, and you’ll be there in three short stops! And remember to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for the crowds on Boxing Day!

No Place Like London for the Holidays

December 17th, 2011
The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is decorated with 500 white lights.

The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is decorated with 500 white lights.

While there’s no place like home for the holidays, we’d just like to remind you that this time of year is also one of the best times to visit London! From the Winter Wonderland Markets in Hyde Park to the Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink, planning a trip to London during Christmas is a magnificent idea. The entire city lights up with the holiday spirit!

One of our personal favorites is the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square. Decorated in traditional Norwegian style with 500 white lights, this year’s enormous 22-meter Norwegian Spruce has to be a must-see during your stay in London! Since 1947, the tree has been given each year by Norway to London as a thank you for Britain’s help during World War II.

The tree lighting ceremony took place earlier this month and included caroling by not one but two choirs—the St. Martin-in-the Fields choir and the Salvation Army—before the big moment when the switch was flipped, lighting up the tree and also the Christmas spirit in everyone in London.

But you’ve got to hurry and book your London trip now because the lights go out on 6 January! So if you’re looking at where to stay in London, celebrate the holidays in a charming London vacation apartment instead of a London hotel. These apartments are located near some of the best Christmas displays in London. And if you’ve fallen in love with the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square like we have, our lovely 1-bedroom Mayfair apartment is the perfect short-term London vacation rental for you! And if you can’t make it this year, start planning for next year!

Kate Middleton Gets Short at Gary Barlow Concert

December 10th, 2011
Kate Middleton, Price Williams, and Gary Barlow

Kate Middleton, Price Williams, and Gary Barlow

Kate Middleton and Prince William attended a Gary Barlow benefit concert at The Royal Albert Hall in the South Kensington area of London earlier this week, and the Dutchess’ dress grabbed all the headlines! She wore a black and white lace dress by Zara that cost only ₤69.99. For Kate who has favored knee-length dresses, a dress showing her knees was a bold new move for her, and we totally love it! The dress was absolutely charming.

We weren’t the only ones who liked it. Within an hour of her red carpet appearance, the dress sold out on Zara’s website. And now are now there are reports that the dress as well as imitations are fetching over ₤200 on eBay and other stores.

Of course, this doesn’t come a huge surprise. In January, she set off a similar shopping spree she when she wore a ₤310 black Libelula coat to a wedding. It’s no wonder that Kate has topped this year’s Harper’s Bazaar’s best-dress list!

On another note, Kate and William are big fans of the singing competition X Factor, which Barlow helps judge. They told as much to X-Factor finalist and Liverpudlian Marcus Collins who performed on stage with Barlow.

The Royal Albert Hall is an amazing venue in London for music and entertainment. Upcoming events include the London Christmas Festival, the opera Aida, and Swan Lake on Ice. This makes South Kensington one of the best places to stay in London and several of our London vacation rentals are located nearby, including our Cornwall vacation apartment and the 3-bedroom Victoria short-term rental, so you always have a place to stay when in town for a show.

Head to the Notting Hill Carnival in London!

August 28th, 2011

Notting Hill Carnival 2011

The Notting Hill Carnival started today.  We headed there to listen to the music, watch and taste the food.  The music was definitely loud, but everyone was in great spirits. A parade, loads of delicious food stands and caribbean music!

Several of our  London vacation rentals are walking distance to the Carnival, including the Princes and the Leinster short term rentals are among them. We spoke with our guests and their families — they were excited to watch the parade and explore.

Unmistakable was the presence of the London Met, the Metropolitan Police.  In some areas, there were more bobbies than onlookers! If you’re in London, head up there and enjoy.  It’s fun event and definitely … peaceful.  Here are some photos of simply the police presence.

By the time we left, hundreds of people were heading to Westbourne Grove and Ladbroke Grove, dancing, laughing and enjoying the last days of summer. It’s a fun time for all — head on over if you’re in London!

D-Day — the Turning Point of World War II

June 5th, 2011

Statue of Winston Churchill - he seems almost alive as he strides forward with steely resolve

Tomorrow marks the 67th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion — the most well-planned, massive and secret invasion of World War II.  A statue of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who helped coordinate the landings stands in Paris  and calls to mind his unwavering will and courage of the English people.  The quotation on the statue says it all:  ‘We will never surrender.’ Click here to read more about the monument and  Churchill’s famous speech.

When you visit London, you must visit Churchill’s War Rooms.  These are the rooms where Churchill directed the war, located just off the Mall near St. James Park and Westminster.  These underground bunkers were sealed after the war and opened several yeras ago. They offer a fascinating insight into life during the War and how all seemed lost.  The courage of the English to fight on is expressed in Churchill’s most famous speech ‘We will never surrender’, which plays in the background as you tour the underground rooms.

The Chelsea Flower Show — The Most Famous Gardening Show in the World

May 27th, 2011

The Monaco Garden, commission by Prince Albert of Monaco won a gold medal

The 2011 Chelsea Flower ends tomorrow, after tens of thousands of people have flocked to Chelsea to see it this week. The Queen and special celebrities go a day early and are the first to enjoy the many show gardens.

The Queen attends The Chelsea Flower Show

We enjoyed watching the daily coverage on the BBC, watching the  the iconic Alan Titmarsch as moderate. He’s the best-known gardener in the UK and presents the coverage in gentle English fashion on BBC 1 and BBC 2 each day. Click here to view episodes of the most famous garden show in the world

If you love gardening or simply enjoy seeing beautiful gardens, plants, flowers and outside ideas –  this is a must-see event that takes place in May every year.  Most of our London apartment rentals become booked months in advance, because they are a walk or short tube ride direct to Sloane Square. The absolute closest apartment is the beautiful Twain vacation rental apartment, located in Chelsea and only a few minutes walk to The Royal Hospital, where the show takes place.  This gorgeous apartment sleeps up to five in complete comfort.

Here are some of our favorite gardens this year:

The British Heart Foundation Garden made from medicinal plants

The arches or ‘heart strings’ rise out of the ground into a black pool, as the beating of a heart. Above the wall are limes, perfect for their heart shaped foliage and also for their edible qualities as young leaves. It serves as a lesson in medicinal plants, as many are known their healing properties in relation to cardiology such as Salix caprea Willow asan important source of asprin.

Celebrities flocked to the show on the first day…

The Royal Wedding — What is it About English Hats?

May 6th, 2011

The Princesses and their hats

British occasions — from weddings to horse races — mean English women go shopping for hats.  The Royal Wedding in London last week was no exception.  As ever, I was amazed by the bold designs, colors and sheer size of the hats!  Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice took the spotlight, while I took a moment to look back on other creations they have worn.

A younger Princess Eugenie at Royal Ascot, quite conservative

The color combination of purple and green was charming, but my French mother-in-law commented, ‘Why not a simpler, more classic design to ze dress and hat? Someone should take zem to Avenue Montaigne  in Paris, to visit ze Grand Couturiers. Tell them to stop first in Chanel and then Dior.”

Amazing contrasts in fashion.  The sleek style of cousin Zara compared to the more colorful looks of Beatrice and Eugenie in London last week.

Camilla likes large hats too…. in fact all of England seems to like large hats.

I contrast the ‘big hat’ choices with 2 stylish women who were at the wedding in London last week:  Victoria Beckham and the Queen of Spain. Some got the dress and hat just right.

Never smiling but chic hat

Even though she isn’t smiling, the smaller hat flatters Victoria Beckham and fits her head .

Stunning hat on Queen of Spain

The Queen of Spain was stunning in a chic beige silk suit with flattering hat. What style!

And then there’s Ladies Day at Ascot…  I took a moment to ponder some of the most outrageous  hats that have appeared in London recent years. You’ve got to enjoy them, even if they’re not flattering.

The next big hat occasion for the Press is Ladies Day at Royal Ascot on June 16.  Count on a post from us with the most outrageous hats for 2012!

The Royal Wedding: Less than 24 hours to go!

April 28th, 2011

I’m so excited I could burst!  It’s less than 24 hours until the Royal Wedding and I’m counting down the hours like a child waiting for Christmas.  I can’t wait to see THAT dress, the look on Prince William’s face when he first lays eyes on Kate, the famous guest list, and (hopefully) a smile on the Queen’s face.  With our London apartments being so close to the action it’s been impossible to avoid the hysteria.  The crowds have been slowly building over the past few weeks, the tourist shops are filled with weird and wacky wedding souvenirs, the international media contingent is huge and royal loyalists have now started to pitch their tents along the route. It’s hard not to get swept up in the fairytale romance that will see Catherine Middleton, a commoner from Berkshire, marry her real-life Prince in front of an expected television audience of nearly 2 billion people.  Let’s hope they don’t forget their vows!

For those of you planning on attending, here’s some handy last-minute links:

Congratulation to the bride and groom, we hope it’s a perfect day with perfect weather!
