Who doesn’t like good news on a Monday morning? And boy oh boy do we have some good news for all of you Downton Abbey fans! Tickets have just gone on sale for the Summer 2014 public opening of Highclere Castle. (That’s the real Downton Abbey for those of you who haven’t succumbed to Downton Abbey mania yet …) Besides ooohing and aaahing over all those gorgeous and familiar settings from Downton Abbey, a visit to Highclere offers the chance to discover the real history of this remarkable castle, which is even more fascinating than fiction.

Think you’re not so interested in English castles (but really … is there anyone out there not interested in visiting a real castle??), how about with a little Egyptology thrown in? Yep, Egypt. How’s that you say? Well, about a 100 years ago Highclere Castle was the home of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who discovered the Tomb of the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun in 1922 with his colleague Howard Carter. Yep, that Tutankhamun. The 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon have opened an Egyptian Exhibition in the cellars of Highclere Castle, which offers a unique glimpse into these remarkable discoveries.

So whether you’re going for a look behind the scenes of Downton Abbey or to simply enjoy a beautiful day trip from London to Hampshire, don’t forget to book your tickets to visit Highclere Castle well in advance. Tickets sell out very quickly! Tickets for all Easter and May 2014 openings are now sold out. Highclere Castle is not open to the public in June, however there are openings in July, August and September 2014.
